Basic Info
Name:Sokka (AU)
Birthdate:1985-01-18
Bio
Character: Sokka
Series/Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Original or Alternate: Alternate

Age: 15
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: Sokka has tan skin, common to people from the Southern Water Tribe. He has brown hair that has been shaved up the sides of his head, leaving one thick streak of hair down the middle of his head, tied in the back with a small ponytail. His eyes are a sparkling blue. Due to a fluke while trying to stay undercover in the Fire Nation, Sokka also has a rather bushy beard, making him look both ridiculous and slightly older than he actually is.

He arrives dressed in the uniform of a guard from The Boiling Rock, not having had the chance to change out of it before arriving in Econtra.

Personality: At first glance, Sokka is the self-described “meat and sarcasm guy.” But, once you get to know him more, you see several more layers. Sokka is an overprotective big brother and feels he has a duty to protect his sister, his tribe, and his family. He has a strong set of morals and a lot of pride. He can sometimes feel inadequate because he is at a disadvantage (being the only person in his group of buddies who cannot bend).

It may not seem like him, but Sokka is a logical thinker with a lot of creativity and is very good at inventing and strategizing. He can take leadership when he needs to and can be extremely responsible despite his sarcastic nature. He knows when he has to be serious and when he has to think, and when it’s that time, he focuses.

Otherwise, he can be pretty cheerful with friends, but can also be equally as suspicious to strangers. He can be brash with new people and it will take a while before he gets used to the idea of someone else in his little circle of friends.

Abilities/Strengths: A logical mind capable of strong strategies. He’s also good with inventing. Recently, he learned to fight with swords and is quite skilled with it, practically on the same level as a seasoned master. It has been pointed out that Sokka is very creative and approaches things differently than other people, which he often uses to his advantage.

Weaknesses: The most obvious of Sokka’s weaknesses is that he is not a bender—he cannot control any of the four elements, which is a common ability in his world. Sokka sometimes doesn’t catch on to when he needs to be serious and can be funny at the wrong moments.

Sometimes, he can be overly suspicious and can get very angry, which, at times, makes him act rashly. He’s not that great at public speaking either.

Notable Possessions: A black metal sword that Sokka made himself using the rock from a meteor that seems to cut through just about anything. (EDIT, post-application--he's also got the White Lotus pai sho tile given to him by his sword master.)

History: Sokka grew up in the Southern Water Tribe, located at (of course) the south pole. It was an incredibly small village, nothing comparable to the vast city of the Northern Water Tribe. Sokka lived with his sister and his Gran-Gran. His mother had died in a Fire Nation raid and his father was off fighting against the Fire Nation. Sokka was left as the oldest male in the village and he took it upon himself to protect the tribe.

Which backfired spectacularly when the prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko, came in search of the Avatar, who was apparently the kid Sokka and his sister Katara rescued from a giant iceberg the other day. The Avatar, a 12-year-old airbender named Aang, saved the Southern Water Tribe, whisking Katara and Sokka away on a mission to train himself to bend all four elements and defeat the Fire Nation. Sokka, of course, agrees—he had been bitter against the Fire Nation since his mother was killed.

The trio travel around the world, slowly making their way up to the Northern Water Tribe to get Aang a proper waterbending master. Aang and Katara learn waterbending together and Sokka hones his (not-so-great) fighting skills. Along the way, they meet several other allies in several other nations, such as Suki and Haru in the Earth Kingdom. The trio meet a band of fighters in the Earth Kingdom hoping to get revenge on the Fire Nation. One of the fighters was named Jet, who they at first allied with, but later found that his fighting style would hurt many innocent people.

In addition to meeting allies, they meet several enemies, and Sokka and his sister have to deal with Zuko constantly trying to catch Aang to redeem himself.

Eventually, the gang makes it to the Northern Water Tribe, where Sokka meets a girl named Yue, the princess of the Northern Water Tribe. The two fall in love, all while the Fire Nation approaches and launches an attack on the Northern Water Tribe. Before the initial attack, they stop and wait overnight (since firebenders are weaker at night, whereas waterbenders are stronger) and the soldiers of the Northern Water Tribe try to come up with a defense plan. Sokka wants to join in and help, but is prohibited from going with the soldiers. It is here that he learns that Yue is already engaged and that her fiancé is going on the trip (and that he is extremely arrogant). The sun then rises, and the Fire Nation’s attack continues. Zuko has, overnight, escaped from the Fire Nation ships to infiltrate the Northern Water Tribe and capture Aang, who he takes with him away from the Northern Water Tribe. Sokka and Yue are only two among the group trying to find Aang as firebenders invade the city. Aang begins an attack on the Fire Nation invasion in the Avatar state while Zhao (a Fire Nation admiral) heads to the spirit oasis of the Northern Water Tribe, where the spirit of the moon resides in two koi fish in a pond. He murders one of the fish before Aang or any of his friends can stop it. Yue sacrifices herself to restore the spirit, leaving a heart-broken Sokka behind.

Aang, Katara, and Sokka leave the Northern Water Tribe afterwards and head to the Earth Kingdom. Aang had received sufficient waterbending training, so they were heading to find Aang an earthbending teacher. While in the Earth Kingdom, Aang and Sokka convince Katara to take a break and watch an earthbending tournament. Aang also figured it would be a good place to find a teacher. And that it was—they asked a young blind girl who had mastered earthbending to become Aang’s teacher. Toph (the blind earthbender) at first refused, but then ran away with the trio (making them a quartet), eventually agreeing to teach Aang. This time, throughout their adventure in the Earth Kingdom, a new element is added to the puzzle: Zuko’s sister Azula and her helpers Mai and Ty Lee. Azula is in pursuit of the Avatar and tries to get Zuko to return to the Fire Nation. Azula and her helpers are extremely efficient and manage to track down Sokka and Katara even though they used a decoy to avoid being tracked.

Later on, the group learns of a Spirit Library filled with important information in the desert. Sokka immediately wants to go and see if it had information on the weaknesses of firebenders, but the guardian of the library refuses to let them in, not wanting the information in the library to be used against other humans. The guardian lets them in on faith, and when Sokka finds the information on the solar eclipse (the day that all firebenders lose all ability to bend fire), the guardian chases them out, slowly sinking the library despite Toph’s attempts to hold it up.

Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Toph arrive at Ba Sing Se when they find plans for a large Fire Nation drill to bore through the walls of the city. Said drill was being led by none other than Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai, but the group successfully stopped the drill before any damage was done. However, they do not move from Ba Sing Se for a while.

It is in Ba Sing Se that the beginnings of the deviation from canon begin. Zuko and Iroh are in line to catch a ferry to Ba Sing Se to start over after being banished from the Fire Nation, where Jet is as well. Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai infiltrate Ba Sing Se dressed as innocent earthbenders. While Aang and Sokka and their friends head to see the Earth King and tell him of the solar eclipse (and are always mysteriously diverted from their goal by their tour guide Joo Dee and an organization called the Dai Li who prevent anyone within the city of knowing about the war outside the city), Iroh and Zuko open a tea shop, and Azula and her helpers slowly begin their plan to take over Ba Sing Se. It is at about this time that Ty Lee, during a leisurely outing around Ba Sing Se, meets Iroh, unaware of who he used to be. She speaks with him and takes a liking to him, but does not see him again until further along in her time in Ba Sing Se.

After a long while, Aang and friends finally manage to break into the Earth King’s palace and tell the King of the solar eclipse, the war, and the Dai Li. The Earth King believes them and throws Long Feng (the head of the Dai Li) into prison. Afterwards, everyone goes their separate ways. Sokka himself is reunited with his father, who had been at war fighting against the Fire Nation.

Azula, on the other hand, is close to overtaking the entire Earth Kingdom and the final battle comes down between Azula, Ty Lee, Mai, Aang, Sokka, Katara, Toph, Zuko, and Iroh. Azula gives Zuko a choice: he could come home to the Fire Nation with her and be redeemed as a prince, or he could stay with Iroh and be banished forever from the Fire Nation with no hope of returning. Iroh, meanwhile, is unable to do anything other than try to persuade Zuko of the right thing to do. Aang tries to activate the Avatar State and is about to attack, but Azula injures him before he could do anything, rendering him severely injured and unconscious. Zuko, meanwhile, is struggling with his choice.

Ty Lee notices that Iroh is torn up over the situation and it isn’t helping that he is trapped. She couldn’t stand the way he was being treated and decided to free him, grabbing him and running before anything else could be done (and Iroh, in turn, grabs Zuko). All three escape.

Azula had already been under a lot of stress due to seeing several hallucinations of her mother. She had been driven close to insanity while in Ba Sing Se, but did a good job of covering it up. Ty Lee betraying her, though, was the last straw, and she completely loses her marbles. Mai is too shocked and is unsure of what to do, and therefore, does nothing other than keep Azula from destroying the entire place. This, however, gives Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph ample time to escape and leave Ba Sing Se. Mai has no other choice than to take Azula back to the Fire Nation, and the takeover of the Earth Kingdom was a failure.

In the Fire Nation, Azula is brought before Fire Lord Ozai, her father. Ozai learns that Azula could have easily killed the Avatar in his tracks, but did not. Infuriated with her failure, he sends her to The Boiling Rock, the worst prison in the Fire Nation.

Meanwhile, Katara tries to heal Aang using waterbending and special oasis water from the Northern Water Tribe. The wounds are terrible and there is nothing more than to hope Aang wakes up—he is far more vulnerable in the Avatar state, so there was a high chance he could’ve died at Ba Sing Se. All Sokka, Toph, and Katara can do is look after him. But the solar eclipse is now approaching, and they have to invade the Fire Nation. The three conscious members of the gang steal a Fire Nation ship and their uniforms, disguising themselves. Along the way, they reunite with Sokka’s and Katara’s father, Hakoda, and his friend Bato. Weeks later, Aang wakes up (and has hair).

At the same time, Iroh, Zuko, and Ty Lee are in hiding in an unknown location in the Earth Kingdom. While they are in hiding, Iroh tells Zuko of his relation to Avatar Roku, only making him feel more and more that he has to join the Avatar to truly redeem himself.

When they hit land, the group unloads and finds a cave that they begini to call home. Nearby is a village and quickly, they steal a few items of clothing. They are now able to walk out in public without being scorched, but at times, they need a disguise. For this reason, Sokka makes a fake beard for himself, and a special glue concoction to put it on. Being the inventor that he is, it holds really well—but later on, he finds that the beard is permanently glued on and there is no getting it off. The group is shocked by the stupidity of it all, but there is nothing more to do.

A meteor shower occurs afterwards. Sokka wants to help put out the fire that it causes, but can do nothing since he has no bending ability. Therefore, he goes to find a sword master who could teach him how to use a sword. He begs the master to teach him and in the end, the master agrees. They spend the day learning basic sword techniques and understanding what made a sword master through creative methods (that Sokka only made even more creative). By the end of Sokka’s training, he was extremely proficient in training with a sword and the master said he was ready to make his own sword. Sokka quickly returned to his friends just outside the sword master’s home and asked if Toph could get some of the rock from the meteor back. Using this meteor rock, Sokka made his own sword, toiling all night to make it. When it was prepared, he finally feels terrible over lying about his identity to the man and admits to being from the Water Tribe. The sword master acts enraged and engages in a final fight with Sokka, ending it with a draw. The sword master says he knew all along that Sokka was from the Water Tribe, but did not think that the art of the sword was limited to any one nation. And thus, Sokka became an excellent swordsman, only destined to become better.

Fast forward to four days before the solar eclipse and the day the group plans to attack. Aang is having a total breakdown and becomes an insomniac. The only thing that Sokka can do to help is try to give Aang a makeshift therapy session. In the end, the night before the invasion, Aang finally calms down and is able to sleep.

The next day, the invasion of the Fire Nation begins. Hakoda returns with several allies met earlier on, including Haru of the Earth Kingdom and several waterbenders that Hakoda convinced to come along. Sokka then proceeds to explain the plan (somewhat clumsily) and leads the way to the invasion. They have to hurry and defeat Fire Lord Ozai before the eclipse ends. While they all infiltrate the palace, there is warfare going on outside in a major battle between the invading group and the defending firebenders. Aang, meanwhile, leaves to infiltrate the palace and fight the Fire Lord. But, he returns early, bearing news that the Fire Lord was nowhere to be seen.

Sokka and Toph offer to help find the Fire Lord, since they are convinced that the Fire Lord would not have abandoned his nation so easily. They unfortunately do not find him by the time the eclipse ends and are forced to retreat, the invasion having failed. They decide to recuperate in the Western Air Temple.

Zuko finally comes out of hiding and decides to join the team, tracking them down to the Western Air Temple. With a great load of difficulty, he manages to convince them to let their past go and make peace, since Aang desperately needed a firebending teacher. Right after Zuko begins teaching firebending, though, he finds that he cannot. In order to find the problem, he and Aang leave to find the origins of firebending, hoping to find the source of the problem. They are led to the original firebending masters, two dragons, who decided whether or not they were worthy of teaching the secrets of firebending to. Deemed worthy, Zuko and Aang find the true meaning of firebending and return to the Western Air Temple.

Sokka receives news of where his father is. He hadn’t seen or heard from Hakoda since the failed invasion, and so is extremely worried. He immediately decides to try and find his father and ends up traveling with Zuko to The Boiling Rock, a notorious prison in the Fire Nation whose namesake came from being in the middle of an extremely hot pool of water, making escape impossible.

Sokka and Zuko go undercover at the prison as guards and wait for Sokka’s dad to arrive as a prisoner. In the meantime, they find Suki, a Kyoshi warrior from the Earth warrior who was captured at Ba Sing Se. Sokka’s relationship with her had strengthened between his first meeting with her and her capture, and is elated to find her there. He decides that he cannot leave the Boiling Rock without Suki, but continues to wait for his father. Just when it seems bleak, Hakoda arrives and Sokka decides they can leave as soon as possible. But it’s not that easy. He and Zuko are under suspicion of being impersonators and need to be extremely careful. Zuko is finally ousted and is held prisoner at The Boiling Rock. All the while, Mai is paying a visit, being the last of Azula’s trio who did not betray Ozai or was not banished. Since her uncle works as the warden of the prison, she is making a check-up on the area.

Sokka and Zuko stage a riot to create a distraction. All the prisoners begin fighting and while the warden is distracted with the riot, Suki captures him before he can do anything and runs off to meet Sokka and Zuko on the gondola that would take them out of the Boiling Rock. They get the gondola working and are about halfway through escaping when Mai arrives on the scene. She had orders to kill anyone who tried to escape during her visit, and therefore tried to cut the gondola ropes down to prevent escape. And she almost succeeded, had Azula not arrived at the last second. Azula, still a prisoner at The Boiling Rock, had grown bitter since her imprisonment towards the Fire Nation. She wanted Zuko to succeed, on a certain level, to get revenge on her father for doing as horrible a thing as imprisoning her. So she fought Mai. And in fighting Mai, she allowed Sokka and Zuko to escape with Suki, Hakoda, and the warden.

They all managed to get back to the Western Air Temple safely (without the warden) and Sokka is reunited with his ‘new girlfriend’ Suki and his father Hakoda. But, he is left to ponder what had happened that Azula suddenly began helping them. And it is that this time that he is taken into Econtra.
